Case 3 - Kyphosis

The spine consists of a series of vertebrae arranged on top of each other like a column . When the relation between the vertebrae is deranged, because of congenital , or developmental , degenerative or neuromuscular causes, the unsupported column bends, rotates, or curves in an abnormal fashion. Scoliosis is a sidewards bend in the spine and kyphosis is an anteroposterior curve in the spine. The presence of these curves is generally progressive and has a dramatic effect on the shape of the body and grave consequences to the social and biological functions of the human body. The stigma of spinal deformity can have crippling physical and psychological consequences to the sufferer.

Since surgical correction of these deformities involve as much as a third of the body tissue, and both the chest and abdominal cavities, the correction of spinal deformity represents the biggest challenge and when done well gives dramatic and gratifying results and represents the peak of surgical excellence and technology.
